It’s no secret that many footballers raise their voices when pointing out an excessive schedule throughout the season. So much so that after the 2022 World Cup, Raphaël Varane announced his international retirement, to preserve his health. A sensitive subject in view of the incredible salaries that players pocket, even if it is true that the meetings accumulate over time, which only accentuates the risk of injuries. Recently, it was Virgil van Dijk who spoke on this subject. “In England we think the schedule is too busy. Players are paid well, but that should never come at the expense of our health. We have to play more and more matches”said the Dutchman, without agreeing to reduce his salary. “No, I am not ready to give up 10% (of his salary). I don’t think it should depend on my salary.” Enough to make Alan Shearer shudder.
The former Newcastle legend is known for his strong opinions. He didn’t have to be asked to go hard on the Liverpool defender. “Absurdity. Absurdity”he repeats. “Players play too much football? What ? Seriously… I know you should never mention money, but you have bigger squads than ever, more substitutes than ever, paid more money than ever, you have the best physios, the best technology, the best All. Do me a favor, do you play too much football? Fucking hell. Didn’t he say it was England playing too much football? I understand international football. We all know why they do it, they do it for financial reasons. But here in England you can see I don’t really agree with that.” The message has gotten through. It’s hard to blame Alan Shearer, who played more than 730 career matches, and is well placed to talk about it.
