A former Liverpool player and manager has told Eden Hazard that he only has himself to blame if his career was short.

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes a lack of dedication caused Eden Hazard to retire last week.

“Hazard? Even his father said he wasn’t serious.”

The former Chelsea captain has hung up his boots at the age of 32. Many were quick to pay tribute to him, but there are some who, like Souness, prefer to talk again about his lack of rigor in his work.

Souness said in his column for the Daily Mail: “Football people don’t understand why Eden Hazard failed to establish himself at Real Madrid. I know injuries played a part, but even his own father said football was not something he thought about when he woke up and went to bed.”

“There has always been a view within football that Hazard did not live and breathe football and I think that is important. The truly great football players are obsessed with the game and their profession,” added the Scot.
