Vinicius Jr has revealed he might not spend his entire career at Real Madrid following a promise he made to his father.
The Brazilian is set to sign a new long-term contract with Real Madrid and is full of praise for his club and life in the Spanish capital. But in a lengthy interview with L’Equipe, the 23-year-old revealed the feelings that could push him to one day leave the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.
“I think I could stay here my whole career,” said declared Vinicius. “ But the club of my life is Flamengo. I promised my father I would come back one day. I must keep this promise.
For now, the winger seems more than happy with his life. “I like life here in general and my family is doing well. When my loved ones walk around, they are recognized and wish us lots of happiness. Little by little, I discovered this new life, new emotions, a fervor…. Madrid is unique.”
Vinicius left Flamengo at the age of 17 after just two seasons in the first team and endured a few difficult seasons at Madrid before establishing himself as one of the biggest talents of his generation. He will undoubtedly be a key man at Real Madrid for years to come, but a sentimental return to the club where it all began is an obvious possibility and a decision commonly made by Brazilian players returning from Europe. In this regard, Vinicius could follow the example of his former colleague Marcelo, who is currently preparing to play a fairytale Copa Libertadores final with his first club, Fluminense.
