Former La Masia product Xavi Simons could play a crucial role when he returns to Paris Saint-Germain in 2024.

Simons impressed for nine years in FC Barcelona’s training system, from 2010 to 2019, but he chose to leave after failing to find a new contract in Catalonia.

His departure from Barcelona saw the Dutch international sign a free transfer to PSG, but his time in the French capital has not been easy and he will face a big call-up next summer.

PSG exercised a buy-back clause on Simons in 2023, after a superb season at PSV Eindhoven, but immediately loaned him to RB Leipzig for the 2023/24 season.

However, according to information from Diario AS, Simons’ position in Paris could change depending on Kylian Mbappé’s future in the French capital.

Mbappé’s contract will expire at the end of the current season and there is no indication that he will extend his stay at the club, while he could be transferred to Real Madrid for free.

If the Frenchman leaves, Simons could be given a bigger role at PSG, based on his form at RB Leipzig, and would represent the continuation of a more balanced transfer policy.
