Harry Maguire, the rebirth

It appears Harry Maguire’s days as a Manchester United player are not yet numbered, if a British source is to be believed.

The former Red Devils captain was relegated to the background in Erik ten Hag’s first season and was widely expected to head out. Indeed, West Ham had agreed a deal with Man Utd to sign the English defender, but the deal ultimately fell through and Maguire remained at Old Trafford.

Given the 30-year-old has only played four times since the start of the season, one would have thought he would be available again in the next transfer window to allow Ten Hag to target a player more suited to his style. But it seems that is not the case.

According to TEAMtalkMaguire has been given a lifeline at Man Utd and his Dutch manager has even been impressed with how he has performed since his transfer failed.

Will Maguire stay?

The aforementioned outlet consulted a source at one of the clubs interested in Maguire this summer and that source claimed that Man Utd had not indicated that Maguire would be available again in January.

In addition, Ten Hag would have been positively surprised by the professionalism of the ex-captain which, according to him, is lacking in the team. Given that Maguire remains in the England squad despite his lack of playing time, the feeling is that he will ‘survive’ another transfer window.

The source also claims that the Red Devils will continue to look at potential options at centre-back, with names like Jean-Clair Todibo, Antonio Silva and Giorgio Scalvini already mooted.

In the absence of Lisandro Martinez and Raphaël Varane, Maguire played the full 90 minutes of Man Utd’s recent victory over Brentford, even providing an assist for Scott McTominay’s goal in the 97th minute.
