This Tuesday evening, Bayern Munich travels to the Copenhagen pitch for the 2nd day of the group stage of the Champions League. But it is clearly not this meeting which monopolizes the attention of the German press. A much more divisive subject provokes many reactions, the Jérôme Boateng case. The German defender has been training for several days with Bayern Munich, to stay in shape after the end of his contract with Olympique Lyonnais.
And the Bavarian club is considering signing him a contract. “Jérôme lives in Munich and kept in shape throughout the summer. He is a deserving player who has performed at a high level for many years”declared coach Thomas Tuchel, who once wanted to recruit Boateng to PSG. “The doors are always open. » The problem, apart from the very mediocre level of the player during his adventure at OL, is ethics.
Boateng’s terrible past
Indeed, Boateng (35 years old) is accused of domestic violence and has already been ordered to pay €1.8 million to his former partner during a first trial. Then, on appeal, the price increased to €1.2 million. The prosecution and the defense appealed this latest decision. The proceedings will now be reopened in another chamber of the regional court. Another ex-partner of Jérôme Boateng had also publicly accused him of having beaten her, before committing suicide after a media smear campaign. Public opinion was shocked, and this explains the rejection, for some, of Boateng’s return to the Bundesliga.
Bayern ignores all this, like sporting director Christoph Freund. “Our approach is what is best for FC Bayern in terms of sport. Regarding the private sector, there is of course a procedure, but it is currently suspended. It’s not a big problem for us.”. Tuchel was also questioned at a press conference on this thorny subject. “It’s the presumption of innocence. The procedure is currently suspended. As a club we have the right to make football decisions and let a deserving player like Jérôme train here. Precisely because the debates are suspended. You know his position and what our situation was in the cup match. Jérôme wanted to stay in shape. He has the opportunity now and then we will make a decision.”.
The doubtful consultants
Tuchel refers to the sportsman, and in the German Cup match, he actually aligned a Mazraoui-Goretzka hinge. The departures of Lucas Hernandez, Pavard, Stanisic were only offset by the arrival of Kim Min-Jae, and De Ligt is currently injured, in addition to being unhappy with his replacement situation. A central defender would therefore not be too much. So much for the controversy… Poor sports planning for the summer, once again, leads to this choice which is questionable at best.
“Who knows today if Jérôme is able to help Bayern? It’s a weird feeling. But it is also and above all a sign that the leaders did not do their homework during the summer transfer window. They give the impression of having lost their sense of direction.for example tackled Lothar Matthäus, former legend of the Bavarian club. “Bringing Jérôme back now after publicly announcing that we were happy with his departure seems strange and a bit random to me”, analyzed former Bayern central defender Holger Badstuber. Remember that at present, no contract has been offered to Jérôme Boateng.
