The highest European authorities have just imagined a new format in championship mode for their prestigious Champions League.
The Champions League, as we know it, is set to end. It will already experience a mini death next season with a transition to championship mode, but it is in 2027 that it will definitively disappear and give way to… the Superleague.
Ceferin ready to scrap the Champions League
And this is not the project imagined by the “rebels” Laporta, Perez and Agnelli, but a competition sponsored by UEFA itself. Aleksandr Ceferin, the boss of the body, would be thinking of a more exciting (and also more closed) event than the current one. The new format would begin in 2027 and see the creation of three divisions of 18 teams each.
This idea is starting to gain ground and it is the Spanish daily “El Pais” which reveals its outlines. The source specifies that there will be an outright elimination of the Champions League, the Europa League and the Conference League in favor of this new format.
Instead, there will be a sort of European championship with three divisions, promotions and relegations would be put in place. And the name of the first division could be the one that caused so much talk a few years ago: Superleague.
