A former Real Madrid striker believes the Spanish capital club lost a lot by parting ways with their French striker, Karim Benzema.

Former Real Madrid sporting director Pedja Mijatovic admits defeat to Atlético Madrid is no surprise.

“No one has Benzema’s numbers”

Mijatovic believes Real will continue to slide after failing to replace Karim Benzema following his move to Al-Ittihad. He told Cadena SER: “No player in the team can come close to Benzema’s numbers. When you don’t have these stats, you have problems. In important matches, like today (yesterday, editor’s note), we suffered.”

In Madrid this season, the top scorer is now a midfielder, in the person of Jude Bellingham. The one who replaced KB9 numerically, in the person of Joselu, does not really do the job even if he has already been able to open his goal counter.

The hero of the victorious C1 final in 1998 is rather pessimistic for the rest of the exercise: “It may be a year of transition. In January it is not possible to sign a big player, but I think that in the summer Real Madrid will carry out a big project with the new stadium. We have to let this season pass. I’m not as optimistic as in previous years.”
