The Ministry of Sports does not intend to change its mind! A few months before the opening of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra announced on the set of Sunday in politics on France 3 the ban on wearing the veil for the French delegation. “The IOC, which governs the rules of participation, is following a logic which consists of understanding the wearing of the veil not as a religious factor but a cultural factor. It is based on the provisions of the International Federations, which are not all the same in manner. There will be heterogeneity between sports. This means the prohibition of any form of proselytism, the absolute neutrality of public service. The representatives of our delegations in our French teams will not wear the veil.expressed the Minister of Sports.

This decision follows on from that taken by the Council of State last June which maintained the ban on the veil in official competitions in France, going against the appeal of the collective of Muslim women, “les Hijabeuses”, against the French Football Federation (FFF). As a reminder, FIFA had withdrawn its ban on wearing the veil more than a decade ago, allowing Moroccan Nouhaila Benzina to become the first veiled player to play in a World Cup this summer during the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
