L’Equipe and La Provence mention the existence of a clause which would cost Pablo Longoria dearly in the event of voluntary departure from Olympique de Marseille.
It’s been difficult to get our heads around the situation of the Olympique de Marseille staff over the past few days. The day after a tense meeting with representatives of supporters’ clubs, Pablo Longoria and the OM Executive Board withdrew from their duties. But the Spanish president has not yet resigned, and he has not yet decided on his future.
However, we should know more quickly, because La Provence indicates Longoria intends to make his decision before Sunday’s shock on the lawn of Paris Saint-Germain. News should come quickly, and the regional daily specifies that the fate of the four members of the OM Directory (Longoria, Ribalta, Oriondo and Tessier) are not related. Everyone is free to choose their future.
Concerning Longoria, L’Equipe and La Provence reveal the existence of a clause that is surprising to say the least. In the event of resignation or voluntary departure, the Asturian leader would have undertaken to compensate Frank McCourt’s group. For L’Equipe, this would concern a few months’ salary. For La Provence, this would be all the income received since he succeeded Jacques-Henri Eyraud as president of OM. This therefore dates back to March 2021, and therefore represents almost two and a half years of salary. Longoria probably wanted to assure McCourt that he would not abandon him to join a new club. He probably did not envisage that the situation would be what it is today.
