Title holders, Manchester City begin their 2022-2023 Champions League campaign with the reception of Red Star Belgrade.

For the first time in its history, Manchester City is preparing to put its title of European champion back on the line. After an exceptional 2022-2023 season and the long-awaited final coronation in the Champions League, the Cityzens start their 2023-2024 European campaign this Tuesday in the shoes of the holder of the title.

Facing theRed Star Belgrade at home, Pep Guardiola’s players start as clear favorites, and the numbers work in their favor. In the 21st century, Liverpool is the only defending champion to have lost their opening match, it was in 2019 against Naples (0-2). The Mancuniens will, however, have to be wary since the winners of the previous season have often had difficulty starting their campaign.

Over 23 editions, nine title holders started with a draw even if, for the most part, the balance of power was more balanced than between the Skyblues armada and Belgrade.
