This Tuesday, Quique Setien was fired from his position as coach of Villarreal. A terrible blow for the former FC Barcelona who now remains on two bitter failures after his lackluster passage in Catalonia where he was landed after the historic rout of the culé club in the quarter-final of the 2020 Champions League against the Bayern Munich (8-2). And this Friday, the latest information published in the Spanish press should not help the 64-year-old coach’s affairs. Indeed, his lackluster management with the yellow submarine has been revealed in broad daylight. In several papers from the major Iberian media, we can read that Setien’s coaching has caused a lot of teeth grinding on the side of the Estadio de la Ceramica.

We learn in particular that in addition to regularly getting the first names of his players wrong, he had also agreed to postpone training in consultation with his group and then to retract a few minutes later. His relationship was also deleterious with his staff and his managers. Indeed, the native of Santander would have come late this summer during the pre-season training and he would also have cut all relations with the club during the month of June. When Villarreal added Pepe Alcaide and David Fuster to its staff, Quique Setien did not welcome them and only spoke to them on the day the summer preparation began. Finally, he regularly granted himself additional vacation without informing the club and he would have given four days of rest this week to go to Santander to play the Leyendas España match against Argentina on Tuesday. The straw that broke the camel’s back for the leaders of the province of Castellon who decided to part ways with Setien in order to start again on healthier bases.
