Antony is accused of physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin and has been kicked out of Brazil’s squad.

Manchester United have been warned that policies must be in place when domestic abuse allegations are made against footballers.

Greater Manchester Police said they are looking into allegations that Antony attacked Cavallin in a hotel room and threatened to kill her.

Antony has previously denied the allegations but has since been dropped from the Brazil national team. Manchester United are yet to comment on the situation and Antony remains available for selection.

The big warning

Women’s Aid has issued a statement warning major clubs of the consequences of domestic abuse if no action is taken on allegations.

Domestic violence is prevalent in our society and all employers, including football clubs, need clear policies and procedures on what to do when allegations are made against an employee”, the statement read. ” When the alleged perpetrator is a high-profile footballer, we know from survivors of domestic violence that it has an impact on football fans and on society at large, who see in the fact that he is playing and he is celebrated on the pitch a sign that the allegations are not taken seriously by the club.

“Protection is vital in these cases, to ensure the safety of everyone involved while proceedings are ongoing.

Manchester United have previously come under fire for their handling of the Mason Greenwood legal saga.

The Red Devils have confirmed Mason Greenwood will leave the club following a six-month internal investigation, after sexual assault and domestic violence charges against the striker were dropped.

However, the club reportedly planned to reinstate Greenwood into the squad before doing an about-face following a huge backlash from supporters. The striker has since been loaned out to La Liga side Getafe.
