This is one of the very nice surprises of this start to the season at FC Barcelona. Coming in the final moments of the transfer market, Gabriel Jesus was far from being the Blaugrana’s offensive priority. After the departure of Robert Lewandowski, the Catalan club had long dreamed of recruiting JuliĂĄn Álvarez, before finally turning to the 29-year-old striker in an express operation which surprised many observers. A choice which raised some questions, in particular due to the repeated injuries of the former Manchester City and Arsenal player and his unconvincing offensive statistics in recent seasons. But since his arrival in Catalonia, Gabriel Jesus has silenced the skeptics.

In just seven appearances, including two starts, the Brazilian international has already scored four goals and an assist. A particularly promising debut for a player who was not necessarily expected. Initially recruited to provide an additional solution at number 9 for Hansi Flick and above all to allow Raphinha to breathe, Gabriel Jesus quickly saw his role evolve. His compatriot’s injury gave him more opportunities and the Brazilian did not miss his chance. With three goals in La Liga, he fully participates in the offensive festival of FC Barcelona, which has already scored 39 goals after nine days of the championship. Above all, his efficiency impresses: the former Gunner averages a goal every 59 minutes.

Remarkable efficiency

This Saturday, against Betis Sevilla (2-5), the 29-year-old striker once again confirmed his excellent dynamic. Started by Hansi Flick, he played 79 minutes and scored Barcelona’s third goal, taking advantage of a bright pass from Lamine Yamal. He could even have scored a double, but his second goal was ultimately disallowed for offside. A successful performance which confirms that the Brazilian can be much more than a simple emergency solution in the Catalan squad. His activity, his movements and his efficiency in front of goal now allow him to claim an important role in Barça’s offensive rotation.

For his part, Hansi Flick does not hide his satisfaction with the performance of his recruit, even if he believes that he still has plenty of room for improvement. “Gabriel is a very high level player and he will do even better. I’m happy, but I think he has much greater potential and he will demonstrate it in the weeks and months to come.”explained the German technician. An ambitious speech which demonstrates the confidence placed in the former Arsenal striker. And for FC Barcelona, this success comes at the right time. While the club does not have a multitude of solutions at the number 9 position, Gabriel Jesus is gradually establishing himself as a credible and particularly effective option who will undoubtedly be useful in the coming days to challenge PSG and Real Madrid.
