Sir Alex Ferguson looked back on one of the most difficult episodes of his life in an interview with the BBC. Victim of a serious brain hemorrhage in 2018, the former Manchester United coach had to undergo emergency surgery even though doctors only gave him a 20% chance of survival. “ I was terrified. I wish I could say I was comfortable. I wasn’t. I had lost my voice, I couldn’t speak anymore », says the Scotsman. Ferguson particularly remembers visits from his grandsons to which he was unable to respond.

To regain his speech, the former manager had to undergo long rehabilitation with a therapist, who notably asked him to write the names of birds, animals or rivers before pronouncing them. “ This is how I found my voice », Explains the man who won 38 trophies during his 27 years at Manchester United, including 13 English championships and two Champions Leagues. Almost 85 years old, Ferguson today says he feels “pretty well despite a few minor injuries”. He was hospitalized again last May while preparing to attend a Red Devils match.
