Having become number one goalkeeper for Paris Saint-Germain at the end of 2025 following an injury to Lucas Chevalier, Matvey Safonov fought to keep his place and succeeded. The 27-year-old Russian goalkeeper was able to win his second Champions League, this time in a starting outfit. An essential status that he does not want to take for granted. Matvey Safonov said this in a media point set up by the Russian selection and the comments were collected by Championship.

“Yes, no one asks me about the future anymore. Nothing has changed for me. My goal was to work and prove myself, and that’s what happened. At PSG, competition is daily. That’s exactly what I was doing. This process started last September, and in December I managed to get playing time. Now the situation has changed: I play every match. My positioning and my state of mind have evolved, but the self-confidence that I had a year ago allowed me to turn everything around. Now I try to prove in training that my efforts are not in vain, I compete with my teammates and with myself» he concluded.
