Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the season by falling to Brighton (3-0). After half an hour of domination, the Seagulls opened the scoring thanks to Pascal Gross, free to turn around at the entrance to the area before finding the inside post (30th). Brighton then punished the Gunners on the counter just before the break, Kostoulas adjusting David Raya with a shot into the opposite net (45th). Even set pieces, Arsenal’s great strength last season, turned in favor of the locals: Schema Andrés scored the third goal with a header from a Gross corner. Kai Havertz had the opportunity to revive his team, but lost his duel against the goalkeeper. Unable to respond to Brighton’s pressure and intensity, Arsenal gave up their first place to Manchester City, who still have a game in hand, while the Seagulls climbed onto the podium.
In the other two multiplex matches, Newcastle and Everton provided most of the support at home. A week after its heavy defeat against Leeds (1-4), Newcastle beat Hull City (2-1) thanks to a perfect start: Joe Willock opened the scoring in the 3rd minute on a serve from Harvey Barnes, before Lewis Hall doubled the lead four minutes later, again served by Barnes after a superb breakthrough. Yoane Wissa then missed a penalty and Mohamed-Ali Cho gave Hull hope in the 66th minute, without preventing the Magpies from moving up to seventh place. Everton remains undefeated after their narrow victory against Ipswich (1-0). Thierno Barry scored the only goal in the 11th minute by deflecting a shot from Tarkowski. The Toffees thought they could break from a corner, but their second goal was disallowed for offside, before Fatawu left Ipswich down to ten men in the 67th minute after a second warning for simulation. Everton took advantage of this success to climb to fifth place.
