It is a transfer which, unlike Rodri for example, had not generated a lot of hype or enthusiasm on the Catalan side. The arrival of Karim Adeyemi had even raised some doubts among many observers, in particular because he was on a somewhat negative dynamic, and he had some behavioral problems recently. Presented as a choice by Hansi Flick, the German striker was seen as a player in search of a new lease of life for his career, and who would above all have to be content with bits of matches here and there, a bit like Roony Bardghji last season.

But after 7 official matches – 6 La Liga matches and 1 Champions League – Adeyemi is already causing a sensation, and is establishing himself as one of the big surprises of the start of the season, at Barça as in La Liga. With 3 goals and 2 assists in 7 games (including 3 as a starter), the German is already returning the trust given by Hansi Flick, while confirming that he will be able to bring a lot to this Barça which is rolling over all its opponents. Against Racing Santander on Wednesday evening (7-2), in addition to having delivered an assist, he notably completed 6 dribbles, created 4 chances and caused 2 penalties.

Already a starter at Barça?

Since his arrival, what has surprised everyone the most is his ability to create danger and his unpredictability. The former Borussia Dortmund man is formidable with spaces, as he is also comfortable in small spaces. He is used on both the left and the right, and already displays a superb understanding with players like Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. Called up by Jürgen Klopp for the next meetings of the German selection, Adeyemi has gone, in the minds of the Barcelona people, from a player who came to make up the numbers to a potential starter.

Indeed, everything now indicates that he is in competition with Anthony Gordon – also performing well for his first weeks in Catalonia – for the position of left winger. Healthy competition, like that between Fermin Lopez and Dani Olmo, which increases the competitive level of the team, with Hansi Flick who wants to keep everyone under pressure and who does not hesitate to rotate. Adeyemi’s profile as a fast and aggressive player always focused on the opposing goal is a boon for Barça’s German coach and one of the reasons why the Blaugrana can look forward to the rest of the season with a certain optimism…
