Sixteen AS Roma supporters were banned from the stadium after incidents during the Serie A match against Atalanta on September 5. The Rome police announced this Wednesday that they had identified and sanctioned these individuals after they performed fascist salutes with outstretched arms in the stands. Some also wore t-shirts promoting Nazism. The bans imposed range from one to five years and concern all Italian venues.
The measures will not be limited to matches played on national territory. Affected supporters will also not be able to attend Roma’s European trips or Italian team matches. Four of them will be subject to an additional obligation and will have to report to a police station during the Roman club meetings. Italian football regularly faces far-right protests in certain fringes of the ultra movement, while authorities have also investigated in recent years the links of certain groups with extremist or criminal networks.
