If Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Ousmane Dembélé appear as the main candidates for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, Diego Simeone has another idea in mind.

While the race for the Ballon d’Or is in full swing and monopolizing the attention of the football world, predictions and debates are intensifying as the final verdict approaches. In recent weeks, the news has mainly revolved around Kylian Mbappé, convinced of deserving the supreme distinction given his record of service this season, Lamine Yamal, for whom the title of world champion trumps everything, Rodri or Ousmane Dembélé, the title holder.

In this concert of suitors from the major European championships, the name of Lionel Messi seemed to have moved slightly away from the leading discussions. That was without counting on Diego Simeone, who was responsible for reinstating the eight-time winner of the trophy at the center of the debate.

Asked this Tuesday at a press conference about his favorite for the most prestigious individual distinction, the Atlético de Madrid coach did not hesitate for a single moment. Faithful to his outspokenness and his admiration for his compatriot, “El Cholo” pleaded the cause of the former Barcelonan.

Lionel Messi took Argentina to the final

“Messi, without a doubt, after the World Cup he played and given his age…”he said. For Diego Simeone, what Lionel Messi accomplished during the last World Cup surpasses everything else. And if the Albiceleste finally came up against Spain in the final, its captain performed at an exceptional level. In total, the striker racked up eight goals throughout the tournament and although his success in front of goal faded from the quarter-finals onwards, his influence in the game remained total. He was thus able to become a decisive passer in the semi-final against England as evidenced by his two offerings for Enzo Fernandez then Lautaro Martinez.

It now remains to be seen whether this final coup in the national jersey will be enough to convince voters to add a ninth crown to his already legendary collection, after his triumphs in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023. The definitive answer will be revealed on October 26.
