Just appointed coach of Senegal, Patrick Vieira learned of the international retirement of Edouard Mendy.

The pages turn one after the other to the side of Senegal. After a 2026 World Cup ended prematurely at the round of 16 stage (elimination against Belgium), the Lions of Teranga saw Pape Thiaw leave his position as coach. A few weeks later, Patrick Vieira was appointed to replace him. This Sunday, another departure was announced: that of Edouard Mendy.

The former Stade Rennais and Chelsea FC goalkeeper was one of the great men of the Senegalese coronation during the 2021 African Cup of Nations. He was still in business during the last edition won by his selection, before Morocco recovered the cup on the green carpet (for the moment).

Exercising his talents within the Saudi club Al-Ahli, the man who is now thirty-four years old decided that it was time for him to hang up his gloves with the Lions of Teranga. According to information from RMC, Patrick Vieira had already been informed of the goalkeeper’s decision. The 1998 world and 2000 European champion with the France team will now have to choose a new number one to keep the Senegalese cage. Mory Diaw, or even Yehvann Diouf are two serious candidates.

Edouard Mendy thanks Senegal

As for Edouard Mendy, it is through his social networks that he chose to inform his followers of his decision. A video with two simple words as a commentary: “Thank you Senegal. » The images retrace his journey, from his arrival in 2018 to his victory at CAN 2021, the very first in the history of his selection.

Images also of CAN 2025 and all the festivities that followed, just to show that he considered more than ever that the Lions deserved their trophy. Commenting on his announcement, many players (or ex-players) showed their gratitude and congratulated him.
