He got off to a strong start this Lille-Troyes, played this Sunday as part of the 4th day of Ligue 1. Revengeful after their defeat in the Champions League against Betis (2-3), the Mastiffs opened the scoring from their first opportunity, Hakan Haraldsson taking a shot from Dilane Bakwa pushed back by the post. Finally, that’s what we believed for a long time.
Long seconds after the goal, the referee Mr. Lissorgue intervened to stop the game, following a call from the VAR. The problem, and it is significant, is that the game had resumed. The Trojans had given the commitment, and the match was underway again. This did not prevent Mr. Lissorgue from finally refusing the goal, the VAR having ended up detecting an offside by Haraldson.
Basically, there is no problem, the Icelander was in an illegal position at the time of the strike. In terms of form, however, it doesn’t work at all. One of the principles of VAR is not to replay an action if play has resumed after an interruption. In this specific case, once the commitment was given, it was theoretically no longer possible for the VAR to challenge the main referee.
Ligue 1+ shows the referees’ error
At half-time, Ligue 1+ postponed the sequence, to confirm the error of the refereeing body with regard to the VAR process. In the images shown by the broadcaster, we can clearly hear Mr. Lissorgue whistling the kick-off after the goal. It was therefore not the Trojans who resumed on their own, too hastily, it was the referee who authorized them.
Then, about seven or eight seconds passed before Mr. Lissorgue really stopped the game, which caused great disbelief from the people of Lille. Normally, at that point, it was no longer possible for VAR to intervene. Obvious error, for once…
