For his return to the Premier League, Ainsley Maitland-Niles did things well. Coming into play at the dawn of the last quarter of an hour of the match between his Everton team and Manchester United this Sunday, the former Olympique Lyonnais allowed his team to snatch a point from a draw (2-2, 3rd day).
For Manchester United, on the other hand, it is a big disappointment, especially since the scenario had been rather to their advantage during the meeting. A balanced match, certainly, but it was the Red Devils who took the lead upon returning from the locker room, thanks to Bryan Mbeumo’s goal, his very first in eleven confrontations against the Toffees (0-1, 46th).
The locals responded, belatedly. A missile from the right sent into the top corner by Tyrique George gave hope to the supporters (1-1, 83rd). But five minutes later, another cold shower for them with this cross from Luke Shaw perfectly headed by Benjamin Sesko (1-2, 88th).
Maitland-Niles stuns Manchester United
United then believed that the mass was said. But that was without taking into account Everton’s desire to come back to score a second time. And so it was Maitland-Niles, also author of a cannonball from the right fired outside the surface and into the axis, who cleaned the other Mancunian window after George (2-2, 90th + 6).
Joy for the Toffees, gloomy outlook for the Red Devils for whom this draw looks like defeat. In the provisional ranking, Everton is eighth and still one point ahead of United, eleventh, five points behind the leader, Manchester City, whom they will face on September 13.
