Gianni Infantino will be a good candidate for his own succession at the head of Fifa. Despite the numerous controversies which have surrounded his management in recent months, the president of the world body has confirmed his intention to run for a fourth term in 2027. Elected for the first time in 2016 after the departure of Sepp Blatter, then re-elected in 2019 and 2023, the Italian-Swiss leader therefore intends to continue his adventure.
In recent months, Gianni Infantino has however been at the heart of numerous criticisms. His rapprochement with Donald Trump, his management of the 2026 World Cup and his project, ultimately abandoned, to cede part of the rights to the competition to private American investors have provoked strong reactions. Several voices were also raised to demand his departure. But despite this protest, the FIFA president maintains a solid base of support.
“Nothing has changed”
Africa and South America in particular remain important supports for Gianni Infantino. Its proximity to several CAF leaders allows it to have significant weight on the African continent, while its influence in South America also gives it numerous votes. At present, no candidate has officially declared themselves to face him, making Italo-Switzerland the big favorite for this new election.
FIFA confirmed on Sunday that nothing had changed since Infantino’s announcement in April. “The president of Fifa announced in April that he would run again in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. The vote will take place on March 18, 2027 in Rabat, Morocco, during the body’s congress. Potential presidential candidates have until November 18 to declare themselves.
