It’s official, Richard Hughes is leaving his post as Liverpool sporting director. Arriving at Anfield in June 2024 from Bournemouth, the British manager, expected at the offices of Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, informed the club’s management of his wish to take on a new challenge. During his time with the Reds, Hughes notably participated in winning the 20th English league title during the 2024-2025 season, before contributing to the club’s qualification for the next Champions League. “It has been an immense pride to have had the opportunity to serve this incredible and unique institution”said Hughes in the press release released by the club.
The president of Fenway Sports Group, Mike Gordon, also praised his work and his involvement during this transition period. “Richard joined us at the start of a period of change, taking on this responsibility by leading our football operations department and overseeing recruitment”he notably underlined. For his part, Hughes assured that he would continue to follow Liverpool “with much affection”while wishing “nothing but success” to the club for the future. Liverpool specifies that the process to appoint his successor has already started and that his identity will be communicated at a later date.
