The Fennecs are fixed. After a month of uncertainty and numerous hypotheses surrounding the successor to Vladimir Petkovic, the Algerian Football Federation formalized this Saturday the appointment of Brahim Hemdani as new coach of the Algeria team, reports state television.
The former Algerian international, aged 48, arrives with great momentum. A few days earlier, he had led the U21 selection to the gold medal at the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games. A success which undoubtedly strengthened his candidacy to take control of the Fennecs.
The FAF Federal Office therefore decided to bet on the former midfielder, who has four caps with the national team. During his career, Brahim Hemdani notably wore the jerseys of AS Cannes, RC Strasbourg, Olympique de Marseille and Glasgow Rangers. With the Scottish club he won the championship and the Scottish Cup.
Two former internationals as assistants
The Algerian Football Federation is thus choosing a profile that is still relatively inexperienced at the highest level. A bet reminiscent of that made in 2018 with Djamel Belmadi. At the time, the former Algerian international did not have much experience on the bench either. Less than a year after his appointment, he led the Fennecs to the coronation during CAN 2019 in Egypt.
Brahim Hemdani will be accompanied by two other former figures of the Algerian team. Antar Yahia and Moussa Saïb have been appointed as assistants to the new coach and manager of the selection. The new staff will not have long to wait before making their debut on the bench of the national team. He will manage his first match on September 25, on the first day of the CAN 2027 qualifiers. An important first deadline for the new strong man of the Fennecs.
