Nicolás Tagliafico was very close to joining Atlético Madrid in the final hours of the transfer window. According to A.S.the Spanish club had reached an agreement on all points to obtain the loan of the left side of OL, who himself had quickly given the green light to the operation despite the interest of Juventus. But the transfer ultimately failed. Lyon initially failed to register Youssouf Fofana in time, recruited from AC Milan to replace the Argentinian. A problem which could still have been resolved, unlike that encountered by Atlético: the Madrid club ultimately did not have sufficient margin in its payroll to register Tagliafico, despite the departures of José Maria Giménez and Thomas Lemar.
At 34 years old and under contract with OL until 2027, Tagliafico represented an inexpensive operation and a profile particularly appreciated by Diego Simeone. The Argentine coach wanted to have two real solutions at the left-back position and saw his compatriot as a complement to Alejandro Grimaldo, recruited this summer and more inclined towards attack. Tagliafico had been waiting for several hours for the green light to join Madrid, but the operation could never be finalized. Simeone will therefore have to count in particular on the versatility of David Hancko to play on the left of a defense which remains less provided than desired after the closure of the transfer window.
