He was elected by his peers in a vote thanks to his 21 assists throughout the championship, a record in history (in addition to 9 goals in 35 matches). He had already received this title from the Football Writers Association, the association of sports journalists in England.
The Portuguese got the better of his opponents from Arsenal, David Raya, Declan Rice and Gabriel, who were crowned champions of England, those from Manchester City Erling Haaland and Antoine Semenyo (he had played the first part of the season with Bournemouth), as well as Igor Thiago (Brentford) and Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest). The midfielder becomes the first Red Devils player to obtain this honorary title since Nemanja Vidic during the 2010/2011 season.
