Long led by Newcastle, Liverpool finally snatched a draw (2-2) after added time for their first outing of the season in the Premier League.

A delicate recovery for Liverpool. The Reds were trailing for a long time before snatching a draw (2-2) against Newcastle for their first outing of the 2026-2027 season in the Premier League. A meeting which had started at a high pace, before the Magpies took advantage of a loss of possession by the visitors to open the scoring on the counter thanks to Anthony Elanga.

Long dominant in possession, Liverpool however struggled to be dangerous. Andoni Iraola’s men circulated the ball without managing to really worry Newcastle. When we returned from the locker room, the scenario had not really changed. We had to wait until the 55th minute to see the Reds finally rewarded for their efforts. Well served, Cody Gakpo found the net to tie the two teams. But the joy was short-lived. Three minutes later, Newcastle regained the advantage thanks to Joe Willock, taking advantage of a moment of hesitation in the opposing defense.

Szoboszlai saves Liverpool at the end of the suspense

The Reds then pushed to come back, settling permanently in the Magpies’ half. Despite several situations, Liverpool struggled for a long time with a well-grouped defense and seemed to be heading towards defeat for their first outing of the season, but were finally rewarded for their efforts in the final seconds. Dominik Szoboszlai found the fault at the end of added time to allow Liverpool to snatch a draw (2-2) and avoid a first defeat.

For Andoni Iraola’s first official meeting on the Liverpool bench, the Reds leave Newcastle with a point. A recovery far from perfect, but Liverpool had the merit of never giving up.
