The funeral of Franco Baresi, celebrated this Tuesday morning in the Sant’Ambrogio basilica in Milan, brought together thousands of supporters who came to pay a final tribute to one of the greatest legends in the history of AC Milan. If emotion largely dominated the ceremony, a moment of tension marked the arrival of owner Gerry Cardinale and president Paolo Scaroni. The two Rossoneri leaders were greeted by loud boos from some of the supporters present, a sign of deep discontent which continues around the current governance of the club.
This public reaction once again illustrates the divide that has developed between a fringe of fans and the Milanese management. Despite the solemn nature of the ceremony, the protests did not disappear and were expressed as soon as the two men appeared in front of the basilica. Many personalities from Italian and European football were also present to pay tribute to the memory of Franco Baresi, including Paolo Maldini, Marco Van Basten, Clarence Seedorf, Roberto Baggio and Mauro Tassotti, institutional representatives as well as delegations from prestigious clubs including Real Madrid.
