Targeted by Didier Deschamps after France’s defeat against Spain (0-2) in the semi-final of the World Cup, Ivan Barton responded to criticism from the former Blues coach. In an interview with Jorge Ramos relayed by A.S.the Salvadoran referee assured that the statements of the French technician had not reached him, recalling that his presence at this level was the fruit of many years of work. “No, absolutely not. Everyone has the right to their opinion. We know what we went through, what we fought for, how we deserved it and we know why we are here. No comment will make us doubt our reason for being”he declared.
Beyond this controversy, Barton said he was particularly proud to represent El Salvador on the world stage. The referee believes his journey proves that officials from small nations can reach the highest level and hopes to pave the way for other referees in the region. He also said that the support and congratulations from Pierluigi Collina after the match were one of his greatest satisfactions of this World Cup.
