Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Emir of Qatar and father of current Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has died at the age of 74. Coming to power in 1995, he profoundly transformed Qatar by developing its economic and international influence, notably thanks to gas revenues and the creation of the sovereign fund Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), which has become a major player in global investments.

His son Tamim, who succeeded him in 2013, is also linked to the rise of Paris Saint-Germain. Under his reign, Qatar continued its sporting influence strategy with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI), owner of the Parisian club since 2011. PSG has thus become one of the symbols of the international influence policy initiated by the Al Thani family.
