Premier League midfielders are breaking all transfer records. Manchester City shocked everyone by signing the young English international from Nottingham Forest, Elliot Anderson, in exchange for a check for €150 million. An amount which makes the 23-year-old the third biggest transfer in the history of football behind Kylian Mbappé (€180 million) and Neymar (€222 million). Mateus Fernandes will not do better, but the Portuguese will become a historic recruit for Tottenham.

Recruited a year ago by West Ham for €44 million, the former resident of Sporting CP will only stay one season with the Hammers, freshly relegated to the Championship. Under contract until 2030, the one we are already nicknamed as the new Bruno Fernandes was courted by big guns such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United. We thought that the Lusitano contingent of PSG could make the difference, but as is often the case, the English clubs upped the ante.

Another record transfer in the Premier League

Having come very close to relegation, Tottenham decided to invest heavily in order to put together a team worthy of the name Roberto De Zerbi. Even if it means overpaying your targets. And after recruiting Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi at a lower cost, Spurs spent €60 million to enlist Brighton’s Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke. This evening, The Athletic tells us that the Londoners have just beaten all their competitors for Mateus Fernandes.

The media announces that the case will be closed in exchange for a check for €98 million. A record amount which will allow West Ham to realize a very nice added value. For its part, Tottenham will recruit the most expensive player in its history, ahead of the €65 million paid for Xavi Simons. To explain the Spurs victory, The Athletic indicates that the amount of the transfer and the salary demanded by Fernandes had become totally unreal for the other courtiers who did not want to enter into the bidding war.
