Disaster for Senegal

In great danger after its two defeats against France and Norway, Senegal lost one of its executives ahead of its last match against Iraq.

Two matches, two defeats: Senegal got off to a very bad start to its World Cup. Beaten to start by the France team (3-1), the Teranga Lions had no more success against Erling Haaland’s Norway.

Weighed down by his defense, Kalidou Koulibaly in the lead, the African champion (on the field) lost 3-1 and is no longer in control of his destiny. Senegal will play a final for third place against Iraq on Friday, but it is not certain that three points are enough to finish among the eight best thirds.

Pape Thiaw’s men will not only have to win but also take care of their goal difference. The statistical specialist Football meets data thus considers that the chances of qualifying for a team finishing the group stage with 3 points and a goal difference of -2 are 86%, compared to 99% for a selection posting 3 points and a goal average of +2.

Mory Diaw to replace him

But preparation for the duel against Senegal began with bad news: forced to come out on Tuesday against Norway, Edouard Mendy will not be able to hold his place against Iraq. “Following an injury to his left knee contracted during the match against Norway, Edouard Mendy will be unavailable for Senegal’s next match,” thus announced the Senegalese Federation.

And his absence may not be limited to this single meeting against Iraq. “Additional medical examinations are underway in order to accurately assess the nature of his injury and determine the continuation of his participation in the competition”added the Federation.

To replace him, Pape Thiaw should trust Mory Diaw, the Le Havre goalkeeper. It was he who came on as a substitute against Norway.
