There is fire at Real Madrid. Deprived of La Liga by FC Barcelona for two years and left without glory in the Champions League, the Merengue club was guaranteed to complete the 2025/2026 season without having won a single trophy. An unacceptable death toll for Alvaro Arbeloa. Inducted in place of Xabi Alonso, the former defender only lasted six months. Added to this were numerous locker room problems.

Kylian Mbappé was singled out more than ever, Antonio Rüdiger had a fight with Alvaro Carreras, while Fede Valverde and Aurélien Tchouameni came to blows. Enough to send the Uruguayan to the hospital. Faced with this general disarray, President Florentino Pérez wanted to restore order. And to do this, the boss of Casa Blanca recalled an old friend, José Mourinho, after winning the last presidential elections, despite a check for €15 million that had to be signed at Benfica.

Back in Madrid, 13 years later

Despite Benfica’s desire to keep their coach, the 63-year-old technician could not resist Madrid’s call. “The board of directors of Real Madrid CF, meeting this Thursday, June 11 and chaired by Florentino Pérez, decided to appoint José Mourinho as coach of the first team for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2029. He will join Real Madrid on July 13, the day the pre-season begins”we can read in the press release published by the Spanish team.

As improbable as it may seem, the Special One is making his comeback on the Real Madrid sidelines. Passing through the Spanish capital between 2010 and 2013, Mourinho won a La Liga, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup in three years. But since then, the Lusitanian has not made a strong impression during his last experiences at Benfica, Fenerbahçe or even Tottenham. Will he be able to seize his chance and prove that he still has the shoulders to lead the most prestigious club in the world?
