The Girondins de Bordeaux are about to change majority shareholders. An agreement in principle has been reached between Gérard Lopez and Sparta Capital.

Will Girondins de Bordeaux supporters soon smile again? While waiting to witness the sporting rebirth of their team stuck in National 2, they should rejoice to learn that Gérard Lopez, owner of the club since 2021, will resell 67% of his shares to Sparta Capital.

The information was revealed this Wednesday by ICI Gironde. The media indicated that the English investment fund had reached an agreement with the businessman and former boss of LOSC. Representatives of the future majority shareholder should also attend the hearing of the Bordeaux club by the National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) scheduled for June 9.

Behind the company Sparta Capital, three French people: the financier Franck Tuil, accompanied by Cédric Boghanim and Gilles Frétigné. The trio participated in the takeover of Lens in 2016 and Lille the following year. The first mission of the future majority shareholder will be to fill the club’s deficit of 9 million euros.

A co-presidency for the Girondins de Bordeaux

Still according to the local media, Sparta Capital plans to spend 6 million euros during the offseason, while Gérard Lopez will add the remaining 3 million euros. The majority shareholder also arrives with the objective of continuing the restructuring of the Girondins de Bordeaux while aiming for a rise as quickly as possible in Ligue 3.

As for Gérard Lopez, he should not move too far from the boss’s chair, even if he will now have to share it. A system of co-presidency should therefore quickly emerge with Gilles Frétigné. The latter will have more power since he will represent the majority shareholder. Finally, as for the coach, Rio Mavuba should keep his position.
