Logically selected by Didier Deschamps to play in the 2026 World Cup with the Blues, Malo Gusto continues to gain strength at the right-back position. The Chelsea player had an overall solid season on an individual level, despite collective performances falling short of expectations on the Blues side. Trained at Olympique Lyonnais, he gradually established himself as a credible option at the highest European level. In an interview with 90min, the 23-year-old spoke in particular about the qualities necessary, according to him, for the right-back position.

“For me, you have to be effective on both surfaces. Today, a full-back must be able to attack very well while being very solid defensively. This is probably the most important quality in this position in modern football.”declared Gusto, a message interpreted as a clear signal sent to his rival Jules Koundé, whose more defensive profile contrasts with that of the former Lyonnais, more inclined towards offensive contribution and projection. “I think I bring a lot of energy. I am someone who likes to move forward, contribute offensively, but also defend and be efficient. I believe this is an essential quality for a modern full-back. I try to bring that fire and that energy to the right side.”Gusto also added. A duel of styles which could animate the choices of Didier Deschamps as the world competition approaches.
