The Julián Alvarez soap opera takes a particularly delicate turn for Atlético de Madrid. Arriving as the new offensive headliner of the Madrid project, the Argentinian seemed destined to become the leader of the Colchonera attack for the coming years. However, just a few months after his installation at the Metropolitano, the relationship already seems fragile. The Madrid leaders have understood that the world champion no longer wishes to stay for the long term and that he even refuses the idea of an extension accompanied by a salary increase. A decision which caused a real shock internally as Atlético had bet on him to embody the future of the club. Despite honorable statistics in the Champions League, his performance in La Liga left a mixed impression and his desire to leave now gives the feeling of an unfinished project. Diego Simeone finds himself in an uncomfortable position since losing a player of this caliber would considerably weaken the offensive balance of his team a few weeks before a transfer window already announced as explosive.

The most worrying for Madrid leaders undoubtedly remains the preference clearly displayed by Julián Alvarez for FC Barcelona. While Paris Saint-Germain was pushing hard behind the scenes and Luis Enrique saw him as an ideal reinforcement for his attack, the Argentine international would have decided to close the door to the Parisian club as announced by the Cadena SER at the beginning of the week, confirmed this Wednesday by Marca. This position enormously complicates Atlético’s plans since Barça does not have the financial power of PSG nor that of Arsenal. Joan Laporta and Deco therefore intend to use the player’s will as the main lever in the negotiations. In Catalonia, it is believed that Alvarez’s desire to join Camp Nou could lower Madrid’s demands over time. A scenario which deeply annoys Atlético, determined not to give up its attacker without obtaining massive compensation. The Colchoneros are still demanding nearly 150 million euros, an amount considered unrealistic in Barça’s current economic conditions.

A real headache for Atlético

Faced with this impasse, several solutions are being studied within the Madrid management. Some officials are considering an operation including Barcelona players in order to reduce the cost of the transfer while strengthening Simeone’s squad. This possibility nevertheless divides internally since other managers prefer to recover a significant sum to rebuild the team with profiles chosen independently of the Catalan market. The problem is that time is against Atlético. The club refuses to get bogged down in an endless standoff because the departure of Alvarez would immediately force the leaders to recruit a very high level striker. However, the best offensive profiles available today cost fortunes on the European market. At the same time, Barcelona moves forward with calm and patience, convinced that the player’s determination will eventually make Madrid break. This difference in strategy creates a tense atmosphere in a file which could quickly become one of the most complex of the summer.

Atlético de Madrid thus finds itself trapped in a situation that it no longer fully controls, as highlighted Marca. The club still has a long-term contract and a gigantic release clause of 500 million euros, but these legal protections are no longer enough when the player has already announced his intention to leave. Internally, some are even starting to consider the scenario of forced retention despite the growing unease around the issue. A hypothesis which appears risky for all parties since a frustrated Alvarez could hardly become the face of the Madrid project again after such a series. Barça continues to believe in a possible agreement despite its financial limits while PSG and Arsenal remain attentive to the slightest opening. For the moment, Atlético is mainly trying to save its position in negotiations where it has gradually lost the psychological advantage. The more the weeks pass, the more the feeling grows in Spain that the Rojiblanco club no longer really knows how to manage the future of its star striker.
