It’s a real earthquake that has just hit German football. After a catastrophic season and a place snatched at the last minute for the Bundesliga play-offs, Wolfsburg was surprised by Paderborn (2-1 ap) and was officially relegated to the German second division. The team coached by Dieter Hecking, however, thought they had done the hardest part by opening the score in the 3rd minute of play at the Home Deluxe Arena, thanks to Dzenan Pejcinovic (3rd). But Christian Eriksen’s teammates, reduced to ten after the expulsion of Joakim Mæhle (14th), were caught before half-time on a goal from Filip Bilbija (38th).
Unable to decide after 90 minutes, the two teams headed into overtime. Two periods of 15 minutes which turned in favor of Paderborn, third in Bundesliga 2. this season, with a goal from Laurin Curda (100th). German champion in 2009 and quarter-finalist of C1 ten years ago, Wolfsburg will have to rebuild in Bundesliga 2 next season. A first since the 1996-1997 season.
