After a catastrophic season and a place snatched at the last minute for the Bundesliga play-offs, Wolfsburg was surprised by Paderborn (2-1 ap) and was officially relegated to the German second division. The team coached by Dieter Hecking, however, thought they had done the hardest part by opening the score in the 3rd minute of play at the Home Deluxe Arena, thanks to Dzenan Pejcinovic (3rd). But Christian Eriksen’s teammates, reduced to ten after the expulsion of Joakim Mæhle (14th), were caught before half-time on a goal from Filip Bilbija (38th).
Unable to decide after 90 minutes, the two teams headed into overtime.
