It was a farewell evening for Real Madrid. After a season punctuated by controversies, debates and without a major trophy, the Merengues (2nd) ended their season with the reception of Bilbao (12th) at the BernabĂ©u on the occasion of the 38th day of La Liga. A meeting notably started by David Alaba and Dani Carvajal, for their final minutes in the Real jersey. The Spanish right-back, captain this Saturday evening, delivered a superb caviar behind the Basque defense for Gonzalo GarcĂa, author of the opener and his 6th goal in the league (12th, 1-0). Jude Bellingham then made the break (41st, 2-1) before Guruzeta gave the Basques hope of a good recovery (45th+1, 2-1). In the second half, Kylian MbappĂ© restored his team’s two-goal lead, also taking advantage of validating his second Pichichi title with his 25th goal in the league. Brahim DĂaz secured the victory for the Merengues at the end of the match (89th), who finally won (4-2) in an evening rich in emotions.
At the same time, FC Barcelona (1st) went to Mestalla to face Valencia. The beloved club – two points from the Conference League before kick-off – could still hope to qualify for the C4 play-offs, but first had to win against Hansi Flick’s men and hoped for a misstep from Getafe (7th) and Rayo Vallecano (8th). Led by Robert Lewandowski, who was playing his 193rd and final meeting with the Spanish Champions, the Blaugranas were put in difficulty by their evening opponent. Even if they managed to take the advantage thanks to a goal from the Pole (61st, 0-1), Hansi Flick’s men were then overthrown in five minutes: first by Guerra (66th, 1-1) then by Rioja (71st, 2-1). Guido Rodriguez sealed the victory for the beloved club at the very end of the match (90th + 7, 3-1). A defeat which puts an end to Barça’s season, which still finishes eight points ahead of Real Madrid. The Valencians finished in 9th position.
Celta validates its ticket for the C3, Mallorca and Girona relegated
In the seven other matches of the multiplex, Celta de Vigo hosted FC Sevilla with the objective of retaining its 6th place, synonymous with direct qualification for the Europa League. Mission accomplished for the Galicians, who secured their ticket for the C3 thanks to their narrow victory (1-0). Behind, Getafe (7th), winner of Osasuna by the same score (1-0), will compete in the Conference League qualifications. Despite its victory on the AlavĂ©s pitch (1-2), Rayo Vallecano – which finished 8th – still has immense European hope, since the Madrilenians could compete in the C3, in the event of victory against Crystal Palace in the Conference League final on Wednesday.
For its part, Real Sociedad finished in 10th place after its draw at Espanyol (1-1). Finally, the names of the two teams which will accompany Oviedo, last and defeated by Mallorca (3-0), in the second division are known: they are Mallorca and Girona, held in check by Osasuna. Despite its defeat against Real Betis (2-1), Levante will indeed play in La Liga next season.
