Even though he was able to hold his place throughout the match, Emiliano Martinez injured a finger. Not reassuring, a few weeks before the 2026 World Cup.

Emiliano Martinez was smiling on Wednesday evening after Aston Villa’s victory in the Europa League final against Freiburg (3-0), his seventh victory in as many finals for the Argentinian international.

And yet, a funny mishap happened to the 2022 world champion before the match. “ I broke a finger warming up today… I’ve never broken a finger before. Every time I tried to catch the ball, it went the other way. Anyway, these things happen,” he revealed on ESPN.

The day after the final, the Argentine press reported a dislocation of a finger, and “Dibu” had to undergo additional examinations. According to journalist Gaston Edul, a fracture was indeed detected.

Martinez, time trial before Argentina-Algeria

Even if he was able to play the entire match against Freiburg, Martinez will have to observe a period of 20 days. The good news is that no surgery is necessary.

The Aston Villa player should therefore miss the Albiceleste’s two preparation matches, against Honduras and Iceland (June 6 and 9). On the other hand, it should be restored for the start of the World Cup, against Algeria, on the night of June 16 to 17.

Even Lionel Scaloni has not yet revealed his list, the Argentine press expects Santiago Beltran (21 years old, River Plate) to be called up as “27th man”, in addition to Geronimo Rulli (OM) and Juan Musso (Atlético).
