Sunday evening, Antoine Griezmann experienced an evening full of emotion for what constituted his last match at the Metropolitano in the jersey of Atlético de Madrid. Approved by the entire stadium after the victory against Girona (1-0), the French striker was celebrated as a true legend of the club, he who over the seasons became the top scorer in Rojiblanca history and one of the most notable players of the Diego Simeone era.

When addressing the public, the 2018 World Champion wanted to return to an episode that remained sensitive in his relationship with the supporters: his departure for FC Barcelona in 2019. In a speech full of emotion, he recognized a choice that he accepts differently today, explaining that he had not fully appreciated the attachment of the club and its supporters towards him at the time. “I know many of you have forgiven me, but I tell you again: I am sorry. I didn’t realize how much affection I had here, I was very young. I made a mistake, I thought about it, and we did everything we could to get back here.”he explained in front of all the supporters. The message has gotten through!
