The 2026 World Cup begins in less than a month. Last summer, the selections were able to have an overview of the complicated climatic conditions over the same period during the 2025 Club World Cup. This year, certain matches will still be played under severe heat waves. In a report published this Thursday, scientists from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) warned of the danger for players of several matches which will be played in extreme conditions.
According to them, 26 of the 104 World Cup matches “could be held in very hot conditions, more likely than during the previous tournament in North America in 1994, due to climate change”. Several matches are categorized “high risk” in open-air stadiums notably in East Rutherford, where France-Senegal will be played on June 16, at 9 p.m. French time (3 p.m. local time). The temperature should be closer to 38 degrees (dry) or more than 30 degrees (humid).
