Saint-Etienne, the astonishing image before the dams

As AS Saint-Etienne prepares for the play-offs for promotion to Ligue 1, a photo taken at Geoffroy-Guichard is something to be concerned about.

The image is striking. Square posts, on the lawn of the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. These famous square posts, cursed by the Greens since 1976, and this Champion Clubs’ Cup final lost against Bayern Munich (0-1) in Glasgow.

AS Saint-Etienne found the posts twice during this meeting, with a left-footed strike from Dominique Bathenay and a header from Jacques Santini. Legend has it that, if the posts had been round, as they systematically are now, the Greens would have won.

But what are these square posts doing in the Cauldron? This is a nod to the Heroes’ Match, a charity meeting organized by ASSE in conjunction with the AFM-TĂ©lĂ©thon, 50 years after this famous 1976 final.

Square posts on the 31st… and round posts on Friday for the dam

This match scheduled for May 31 will pit some former glories of the Greens against a team made up of personalities from sport or elsewhere. The funds raised will be used to support research dedicated to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The photos of these square posts, designed by the company Ciplibat, were taken a few weeks ago during a testing session. There will of course be big prizes this Friday for the play-off against the winner of the match between Red Star and Rodez…
