OM plunges back into doubt. The weekend of the 30th day of Ligue 1 further complicated the situation for Olympique de Marseille, beaten 2-0 by Lorient. A poor performance which caused the Marseille club to slip to 6th place, out of the qualifying positions for the Champions League, while Olympique Lyonnais returned to the podium by taking 3rd place, ahead of Lille and Rennes.
In this tight context, a study looked at an alternative classification: that of Ligue 1 without the goals scored in added time. An exercise which does not radically modify the overall hierarchy, but which strongly impacts certain teams, starting with Marseille.
Marseille loses big
According to this projection, by removing the goals conceded after the 90th minute, Olympique de Marseille would see its ranking change significantly. The Marseille club would thus gain three places to join the virtual podium, moving up to 3rd position, just one unit behind RC Lens and two points behind the leader.
Conversely, LOSC appears to be the team most advantaged by this “money time”. Without its late goals, the northern club would lose several precious points and fall from 3rd to 6th place, thus leaving the virtual podium. For its part, despite these theoretical adjustments, Paris Saint-Germain would remain firmly at the top of the championship.
