Unfortunately there was no more hope for Hugo Ekitike. Taken out on a stretcher and in tears just before the half-hour mark of the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain (0-2), the former resident of Eintracht Frankfurt could no longer hold on to his right leg. No diagnosis had yet been made and all observers already feared a nasty injury to the Achilles heel. An impression confirmed yesterday by the coach of the France team, Didier Deschamps. The Bayonnais did not announce a precise diagnosis, but confirmed that his player would not be traveling to the United States.
“Hugo was seriously injured Tuesday evening against PSG. The severity of his injury will unfortunately prevent him from finishing the season with Liverpool and participating in the World Cup. Hugo is one of ten young players who have made their debut for the national team in recent months. He had integrated perfectly into the group, whether on or off the field. This injury is a huge blow for him, obviously, but also for the French team. His disappointment is immense. Hugo will return to his best level, I am convinced. But I wanted to show him all my support, as well as that of the entire staff. We know that he will be fully behind the French team and we all think very highly of him”.
Another long-term absence for Liverpool
Announced forfeiture for the 2026 World Cup by Didier Deschamps, the Liverpool striker had not yet seen the diagnosis of his injury made official by his club. It is now done. As announced, the Frenchman is seriously injured in the Achilles tendon. After being forced to do without the services of the most expensive recruit in its history, Alexander Isak, for many months, the Reds see another striker join the infirmary for a good while.
“The striker had to be replaced in the first half of Tuesday’s Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield after slipping on the pitch. Medical examinations then confirmed a rupture of the Achilles tendon. Ekitike will therefore be sidelined for the rest of the season and will not be able to participate in the World Cup this summer with the France team. Further information will be communicated in due course, with Hugo having the full support of everyone at LFC”indicates the press release.
