Senegal did not miss the great opportunity to celebrate its coronation at the 2025 African Cup of Nations, on January 18, during the friendly match organized at the Stade de France against Peru (2-0), Saturday afternoon. Two weeks after the astonishing decision of the CAF appeal committee to inflict a defeat on the green carpet on the Lions of Teranga, due to their withdrawal from the field in added time of the second half, captain Kalidou Koulibaly presented the trophy to the Senegalese supporters who came to the Saint-Denis enclosure.

Since March 17, it is Morocco which has been presented as the winner of the CAN organized on its lands. As the competition regulations indicate, the Senegalese withdrawal after the penalty awarded to the locals for a collision with Brahim Diaz – at the request of their coach Pape Thiaw – automatically results in a 3-0 defeat. So what about the rest of the match decided by the referee of the game and the 1-0 victory on Pape Gueye’s goal? It is the opinion of the CAS, requested by the Senegalese federation, which will be taken into account by the CAF!

Senegal and its trophy ” obsolete “

As the Senegalese appeal was not suspensive, the Lions of Teranga were not really legitimate in parading with the cup at the Stade de France. Supporters from both camps have been tearing each other apart on the networks for two months but the Moroccan media are also taking advantage of this to heavily attack Senegal. “The trophy must be awarded to the winner, Morocco, and the medals exchanged. The evening ceremony therefore made no sense, its actors blatantly ignoring the rules and insisting on presenting an obsolete trophy, celebrating a revoked title.written for example Le360, as cited by Afrik Foot.

The media Al Mountakhab evoked “a scene which illustrates all kinds of open rebellion and non-compliance with the decisions rendered by the Appeal Commission of the Confederation of African Football”. We can also read that legal experts believe that this celebration, “which testifies to an institutional rebellion and a blatant disregard for the authority of judicial decisions”could influence “strongly” the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The series is far from over.
