Mason Greenwood will not be able to continue his career in England after Manchester United’s decision to cut ties with the striker, according to Chris Sutton.
The club announced earlier this week that they would not bring Greenwood back to their ranks, following the conclusion of their internal investigation into the player.
The striker was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of domestic violence and sexual assault, and was suspended by the club at the time. He was then charged in October, but the charges were dropped in February this year, due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence.
United have reportedly considered bringing Greenwood back, according to a report by The Athletic, but this decision was overturned after a violent backlash from supporters. Managing director Richard Arnold has even been told he should think about his position at Old Trafford, while Gary Neville has condemned the club’s handling of the situation.
Former England football star and now respected consultant Chris Sutton believes United have come to the right conclusion, even though he believes it will be impossible for the former England international to return to football in this country.
Addressing the DailyMail, the former Blackburn Rovers and Chelsea striker said: Manchester United only had one decision to make and they made it in the end. It was the only decision (they could make), the sensible decision”.
The Premier League is over
Asked if Greenwood could revive his career in England, Sutton replied: ” Absolutely not. The pressure on his teammates and the attention paid to his club, whatever it is, is not an option.
“He will have to go abroad and try to repair his career. He’s a talented boy, he got lost, he made mistakes as he said in his statement. Big mistakes, and he just has to… it’s all about small steps.
“He has to try to get back into the fold, but he can’t do it in this country.
