FC Barcelona sporting director Deco has ruled out exercising Marcus Rashford’s option to buy before next summer and revealed an alternative plan for the winter transfer window.

Rashford, who arrived at the Catalans on loan for a season after losing his starting place under Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, had an excellent start to the La Liga season.

Rashford flourishes in Spain

Rashford’s start to his career at FC Barcelona is promising after his summer loan from Manchester United. After years of irregularity in the Premier League with the Red Devils, the English winger has finally found his best level within the Catalan club under the leadership of Hansi Flick. His blazing speed, improved decision-making and new-found confidence were on full display in last month’s Clasico, where he provided an assist for Fermin Lopez, as well as in his Champions League double against Olympiakos.

The 28-year-old’s return to form has been aided by Brazilian winger Raphinha’s recurring injuries since the start of the 2025-26 season, which has allowed Rashford to become the indisputable starter at left winger. He quickly established himself in this position, finding an excellent understanding with players like Ferran Torres and Lopez in the fluid offensive system put in place by Flick.

The Englishman’s revival has not gone unnoticed, with Barcelona bosses already in talks to activate the purchase option included in his loan deal with Manchester United. He has also returned to the England national team and looks set to feature in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for next year’s World Cup.

Barca are not expected to activate Rashford’s purchase option until the summer.

Despite Rashford’s impressive performances, FC Barcelona will not activate the option to purchase his contract in January, with the club going through difficult financial times. On the resumption of training at the Camp Nou, sporting director Deco said: “If everything goes well and there are no surprises, I don’t think it’s necessary. We know exactly where we can improve and what the difficulties are. Last season we also went through difficult times, but we were able to overcome them.

“When we lower the intensity, we suffer. We need our best players. There are no excuses, but when you can’t make changes because of injuries, especially in midfield, there are always areas to improve, even when you win. »
