An initial success against Ukraine (0-2), confirmation at home against Iceland (2-1) and a third victory validated last Friday at the Parc des Princes against Azerbaijan (3-0), the French team is getting ever closer to the 2026 World Cup. This Monday, the Blues are traveling to Iceland (8:45 p.m.). They could leave with their ticket to the World Cup in their pocket.

Without even waiting for the last two matches of the qualifying phase scheduled for next November, respectively against Ukraine (13th) and Azerbaijan (16th), Didier Deschamps' men will have the opportunity this evening to take some weight off themselves. But several conditions will be required to achieve their qualification.

The first will be nothing more and nothing less than a victory against the Icelanders. If the Blues are logically favorites on paper, they nevertheless lost big with the injury to Kylian Mbappé three days ago. Victim of a sprained right ankle with Real Madrid, the Bondynois still joined the Blues and insisted on playing Friday's match against Azerbaijan. A goal and an assist later, he was forced to go out more than expected… and return to Madrid for treatment.

French team, qualification possible from Monday or in November

As a result, it is a French team deprived of its best offensive asset, but also of its captain, which will appear this evening at the Laugardalsvöllur stadium in Reykjavik. The second condition for direct qualification for France will be directly linked to the other meeting which will pit Ukraine against Azerbaijan at the same time. If the Ukrainians do not win, then the mission will be accomplished for the Blues.

Otherwise, everything will be decided on November 13 against these same Ukrainians who are currently five points behind the French and occupy second place in Group D.
